Golam Mohiuddin is currently working as a postdoctoral fellow at Department of Chemical Sciences, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Mohali (IISERM) with Dr. Santanu Kumar Pal. He completed his Ph.D. working under Professor Nandiraju VS Rao in 2014 Assam University (Central), India. His current research interest covers the design, synthesis and characterization of unconventional bent-core or bent shaped liquid crystals and investigate their multi-stimuli-responsive properties for miscellaneous device application.

Achiral unsymmetrical three-ring bent-shaped liquid crystals comprising amide and imine linkages with transverse substituent of chloro moiety on the central phenyl ring in the core, exhibiting polar banana phases. The nucleation of this banana leaf is observed during cooling the sample @ 0.5 degree/min. Upon close observation one can easily identify the undulation in the leaf indicated by different color intensity region.
Jury comment: This picture, even if it is yellowish, shows one of the nicest “banana leaf” I have ever seen.
