Balaram Pradhan is a Lecturer in Chemistry at Anchal College, Padampur, under Sambalpur University, Odisha, India. On the same time He is continuing his Ph. D. programme with Dr. A. S. Achalkumar, Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, Assam, India. His research work is related to the design, synthesis and characterization of Conventional and Non-conventional Liquid crystals and to study their thermal, photophysical properties as well as sensing activity.

The image resembles stripe patterns textures with schlieren defects of a three ring compound consisting of thiadiazole moiety which was taken in a glass slide sandwiched with cover slip for temperature interval of 4.5º at the transition from nematic-nematic phase. The picture was taken at 117.9℃ on Nikon Polarizing microscope attached with Mettler hot stage and Nikon Digital sight DS-Fi1 digital camera. The image dimension is 640 X 480 (Width 640 pixels and Height 480 pixels).

Jury comment: The dark green stripe pattern in the LC phase is just like lawn at night.
