Gayatri Kalita was born in Sivasagar, Assam, India. She was a UGC research fellow completed her doctoral programme with Prof. Nandiraju V. S. Rao and Dr. Manoj K. Paul, Department of chemistry, Assam University, Silchar, India. Currently Dr. Kalita is working as research associate at CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology, Jorhat, India with Dr. Dipak Prajapati (Chief Scientist) and Dr. Gokul Baishya (Scientist) in the field of Organic Chemistry.
Her research interest is to design, synthesis and characterization of room temperature bent core liquid crystal, nematic liquid crystal, photochromic azo based liquid crystal dimer with novel molecular architecture and to study their optical properties.

The picture shows the growth of the cloudy type nematic droplet from isotropic liquid in a four ring bent core compound.The picture was taken on normal glass plate covered with a glass slip at 151°C under Nikon Polarizing microscope attached with Instec STC 200 hot stage and Nikon Digital sight DS-Fi1 digital camera.


Jury comment: The small nematic droplets in the picture look like raindrops on the windows.
